Zora Neale Hurston was a prideful person with undeceive beliefs for her era. Grew up in a black town with an assertive family, she had a fierce sense of self that she carried with her all her life, even in the face of racism and criticism by African Americans for pandering to whites. Living in the era of the Harlem Renaissance where African American’s expressions towards cultural beliefs which affected by the Great Migration, Hurston was greatly influenced by the new ideas. Through her short story “Spunk," Zora Neale Hurston successfully revealed her discouragement towards Spunk and his inappropriate actions to marry Lena (a married woman) which employs many of her disbeliefs and disagreements towards inequality of any kind. Hurston’s background tremendously affected her writings by their styles, dialogues and scenarios. By using imagery and the themes of betrayal, Hurston successfully portrayed her view towards her own society.
